If an individual is charged with an offense and is later found not guilty, or the case is otherwise dismissed, the fact that a person is charged with the offense remains on his criminal record, even though there was no conviction. Individuals often prefer to not have the charge shown on their criminal record. Virginia law allows for an expungement procedure that in many cases may result in the deletion of the charged crime.
